AKALA

Akala is an English rapper, from Kentish Town, London. He is one of the few on this list that is not a producer in his own right but some of his song productions were too relevant not to be on the list. So, in that case, his biggest songs were produced by Dash and Reza Safina (respectively[1]).

Dash – Roll Wid Us (Dexplicit Remix)| Akala: Roll With Us (Dxp Remix) (Instrumental)

Dash – Roll Wid Us | Akala – Roll Wid Us (Dexplicit Remix) (Instrumental)

Reza Safina – Shakespeare | Akala – Shakespeare (Instrumental)

ALIAS

Only the proper ancient grime-heads will know about Alias. You had to have been there right at the beginning to remember Alias now. It might sound like proper rudimentary grime production quality to the casuals and the new-agers but trust me when I say that Gladiator[2] was one of the most popular and influential grime instrumentals of the 2003 – 2006 ‘first golden age of grime’ era and Warrior was not far behind. Gladiator 2 was significant in its own right. Both Gladiators used soundbites from two of the most significant scenes in film history as samples before the drop…: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius” … and “Are you not entertained…” from the Russell Crow film Gladiator[3]. One of the best films of all time.

As well as being the first grime artist to break into the mainstream, and the most successful grime artist of all time, Dizzee was an accomplished producer in his own right and played a major role in crafting the original grime sound through vocals and productions. Dizzee Rascal also self-produced his first album “Boy In Da Corner” after the success of his self-produced song “I Luv U”[4].

FOOTSIE

Footsie’s style is like a cross between Jammer and Terror Danjah. His King Originals series of instrumental mixtapes contains some serious tracks. He is one part of the grime duo Newham Generals with D Double E. They are also signed to Dizzee Rascal’s Dirtee Stank record label.

Footsie and Tubby – It’z War | It’z War (Instrumental) – Footsie and Tubby

JAMMER

Jammer – Fire Hydrant (Remix) | Jammer – Fire Hydrant [Grime Classic]

Jammer’s remix of Fire Hydrant is almost better than the original. I prefer it. The instrumental itself is a bit more advanced as it has more production elements going on. If I were a DJ, I would make a point of mixing Fire Hydrant into its remix, whenever I played either.

Jammer – Hollow Man | Jammer – Hollow Man

Hollow Man is a personal favourite of mine due to its sombre tone and progressive arrangement. The sequences of the various instruments layer over one another in a way that is very simple but sounds more complex than it would have been to create. Because of this, the arrangement appears complex but created a formula that Jammer would go on to recreate in his various productions at that time. These were still the early days of grime production and producers were generally breaking new ground with every new production when it came to sound engineering in general. For me, this was one of Jammer’s most complete instrumentals.

Jammer – Gas Man | Jammer – Gas Man

Jammer – Destruction[6] | Jammer – Destruction (Instrumental)

Jammer – Shangooli | Jammer – Shangooli [Grime Classic]

I liked the industrial style and sound that Jammer had in the early days. The way it almost sounded like it was made in a factory. Destruction was one of the forerunners and was one of those popular beats in that part of the scene at that time, especially when it came to radio sets.
